News About the News Cafe — a Miami Beach Icon

The creator and owner of the iconic News Cafe, Mark Soyka, says his concept for the New Cafe was of a place for the international fashion industry to hang out, have coffee, read newspapers and magazines from all over the world — and be seen.

Now, almost 30 years later…

it is hard to imagine South Beach without the News Cafe. Mark fell in love with South Beach because it reminded him of his native Tel Aviv, small-scale hotels and buildings in an urban setting by the sea. In this video excerpt, Mark talks about Italian designer Gianni Versace moving to Miami Beach and his murder in front of his  Ocean Drive home soon after leaving the News Cafe in July of 1997.

Mark was in front of the camera for our latest Miami Beach Visual Memoir oral history video. The project is in its 5th year documenting the events and people connected to Miami Beach through their memories and stories. The project is funded under a grant from the Miami Beach Visitor and Convention Authority.
